Hans Tibboel was born in The Netherlands but left his homeland for the tropics at age 24. He learned to dive in Chumpon, Thailand in 1991 and has never left the water ever since. Thailand became his new home as he worked as Divemaster and Instructor in Chumporn and Krabi before finally settling down in Phuket.
Hans’s diving adventures have taken him to the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Tao, Chumporn, Koh Samui. Pattani, Losin), the islands and dive-sites off the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia (Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Tenggol, Pulau Tioman, Pulau Aur , Pulau Redang etc.) and the Kuantan Wreck, the Similan Islands including Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, the Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock in Thailand, the Mergui Archipelago and the Burma Banks in Myanmar, the Andaman Islands from India, North Sulawesi (Lembeh Straits, Bunaken, Bangka, Gangga and the Sangihe Archipelago) and Irian Jaya (Waigeo, Kri etc.) in Indonesia. Most of these places he dived when working as Cruise Director on the “Ocean Rover”.
Hans currently holds a Master Instructor rating, has logged well over 6000 dives and has a passion for nudibranchs, flatworms, saron, harlequin and tozeuma shrimps, weird looking creatures and sharks. He has been fortunate enough to dive some remote islets and pinnacles in the Sangihe Archipelago (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) and to find a new species of nudibranch (“Glossodoris tibboeli”). He hopes his future will bring him to destinations like the Philippines, South Africa, Mozambique, Costa Rica’s Cocos island, the Bahamas and many-many more times back to North Sulawesi and Indonesia.
More importantly though is that he will get a “real” job and finally start to make some money to be able to visit and dive those places!
