The first underwater experience of Marco was during a holiday on the Caribbean island Bonaire back in 1999. Beginning 2002, Marco became a certified Open Water Scuba diver in the country where he was born, the Netherlands at an age of 32 years. Together with his father, Marco was conducting necessary certification dives in a lake near Amsterdam in fairly cold conditions wearing double 7mm semi-dry wetsuits. Later in 2002, Marco and his father went back to Bonaire as certified Scuba divers for a 2 week diving holiday to recover from the cold certification course in Holland. During this trip, Marco used his first underwater disposable camera with film, got unsatisfying exposures and was even more impressed by the evening projector presentation which showed underwater photography of a competition at the dive resort where they were staying. Marco went to Bali on a safari diving trip in October 2003 with his dive club from Holland and was returning there for several years until he finally settled on the island, married and started working for/with local dive center BIDP (Bali International Diving Professionals). Interested in studying anything that lives under the surface of the water since childhood, Marco got his first digital underwater compact camera in 2006 and is currently using a Canon Powershot G9 in WP-DC21 housing with Inon D2000w strobe and Inon UCL165 macro lenses.
