He has studied nudibranchs for more than 40 years, with main interests in taxonomy, nomenclature, and feeding preferences. He obtained his B.Sc. in 1970 from California Polytechnic State University; & M.A. in 1978 from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. He was a marine biologist and computer specialist at Long Marine Laboratory, University of California at Santa Cruz, from 1976 to 2007. He retired in 2007 and is now a Research Fellow at Long Marine Laboratory. His interests include “macro photography” & he is now photographing insects & other terrestrial subjects as well as spending more time in the intertidal photographing marine invertebrates, especially nudibranchs, & posting his photo to CalPhotos. His expertise is mainly for species from the west coast of North America, but he has an extensive library (over 6500 reprints and most of the books written about nudibranchs) and can often identify species from other areas. His photos have appeared in general zoology, invertebrate zoology, & ecology textbooks, as well as "Between Pacific tides" & "Intertidal invertebrates of California". He wrote the nudibranch sections for the 3rd edition of “Light’s Manual” & 4th edition of the “Light & Smith Manual”. You can see some of his other nudibranch related information at: Nudibranch Systematic Index, Nudibranch Bibliography, and A List of the Worldwide Food Habits of Nudibranchs
