"An undescribed species. A pair of mating individuals. This is an astounding photo! Gymnodorids are often highly cannibalistic, so in this species the genital apertures have moved to a position level with the gills – a most unusual rearward position that is unique in nudibranchs – presumably to move the site away from the mouth to prevent one partner eating the other during mating. The only other species with the reproductive organs in this rearward position and row of papillae on the oral margin is Gymnodoris bicolor, but that dos not have the greatly enlarged propodial tentacles. In this species it seems that not only the penis is protruded, but also the vagina of the other partner, which makes it even more unique."
